Home veterinary nursing support is provided to review basic animal health, carry out agreed nursing tasks, and record observations within the limits of nursing care.
Access arrangements are confirmed and relevant handling requirements are noted before work begins. Basic information is reviewed, including species, age, known conditions, current medication, recent surgery, feeding routine, water access, behaviour notes, and any movement or handling restrictions.
A basic nursing assessment is completed using observable signs and available history. This may include general demeanour, mobility, breathing effort, appetite, hydration, wound appearance, bandage condition, toileting pattern, and any signs of pain, swelling, discharge, or deterioration. Findings remain limited to non-diagnostic nursing observations.
Any required equipment, medication, or consumables are prepared in line with the agreed task. Safe handling is maintained throughout, with attention to restraint needs, environmental hazards, feeding instructions, fresh water provision, and supervision requirements for recovery or restricted activity.
Routine nursing tasks are completed as appropriate to the animal’s condition and the agreed scope. This may include medication administration, basic wound or post-operative support, monitoring of recovery signs, and assistance with feeding or hydration where relevant. Tasks remain within the limits of home nursing support and do not replace veterinary examination or treatment.
A clear handover is provided covering the work completed, any changes observed, and practical aftercare points such as rest, monitoring, feeding, water, handling, and activity restriction. Any concerns outside nursing scope are escalated for veterinary review, particularly where there are signs of worsening condition, uncontrolled pain, bleeding, breathing difficulty, or wound complications.
